Credit to Lina Tayara for landing this interview — when a VP of Global Data Center Strategy at Carrier starts talking about facilities as 'integrated energy and thermal systems' rather than just buildings full of servers, that's a tell. The vendor-speak about 'thermal orchestration' and 'waste heat reuse' is really an admission that cooling these AI clusters has become one of the central engineering and cost problems of the whole buildout — and increasingly, a community-facing one.

Liquid cooling and heat reuse sound great in a pitch deck, but the underlying reality is that hyperscale AI campuses are pulling more power and often more water than the conventional data centers they're replacing, and someone local is footing the bill through utility rate cases, water allocations, and land-use approvals. 'Reducing strain on the grid' is a fine goal, but it's worth asking which grid, whose rates, and whether that promised waste-heat district-heating scheme actually shows up in the signed agreement or just the marketing copy.
