Know the Buildout

01

What's happening?

Hyperscalers are building data centers across the country — each one drawing megawatts of power, millions of gallons of water, and years of tax breaks. We track where they land, and when a new project surfaces anywhere, we broadcast it within the hour.

Why should I care?

It's your grid, your water, and your tax base. A single campus can draw as much power as a city and lock in decades of abatements — decided in rezoning and power-contract votes that rarely make the news.

What can I do?

Look up the data centers proposed in your own town, ask your local officials the hard questions, and help the people around you see what's coming before the vote.

What is GridWatch the USA?

GridWatch the USA is an independent accountability project tracking the quiet spread of hyperscale data centers across America — and the power, water, and tax deals they run on. Watching one is simple: find the project, tell the neighbors, and make officials answer for it before the vote. We’re the national broadcast for that fight — and the movement’s reference library: the largest public archive of data-center news, the only permanent history of the national buildout, the deepest local dataset (a report for every city in America), the biggest categorized video library, and a national directory of local chapters. All free. Our National Record Index is the largest public archive of data-center buildout news anywhere — 29,200+ headlines going back over a decade, sorted by topic, searchable, and growing every hour. If it happened in this fight, it’s in the National Record Index.

What is a hyperscale data center?

Hyperscale data centers are warehouse-scale computing campuses built for cloud and AI workloads, often clustered near cheap power and water. Each one can draw as much electricity as a mid-sized city and millions of gallons of water a day — and lock in decades of tax abatements, usually approved in rezoning and power-contract votes. We're tracking more than 2,000 megawatts of proposed and built capacity nationwide, most approved with little public scrutiny. New to this? Start with our plain-English primer or the data-center glossary.

The archive nobody else keeps

A map is a snapshot; we keep the film. Every hour we check the national buildout against our own permanent archive and log what changed — every project proposed, approved, expanded, or built, with dates and receipts. Every facility on our map carries a dossier: who operates it, how much power and water it draws, the community it sits in, and when it was first filed. When a new project surfaces anywhere in America, it becomes a news item in our National Record Index within the hour — first anywhere. And rezoning and power-contract votes often surface here before they happen, while there’s still time to show up and speak.

Find the data centers near you

Our live facility map shows every tracked data-center project in the country. We’ve also built a local buildout report for every state, county, and city in America: megawatts, water draw, rankings, local news, and what to do about it, from California to Texas to the town you grew up in.

Then do something about it

Towns across the country have paused or rejected data-center proposals after residents showed up and asked hard questions. Our Take Action guides cover records requests, council meetings, and organizing — and local GridWatch chapters are already fighting from Georgia to Arizona and beyond. Know of a project that isn’t on our map yet? Help us map it and put your town on the record.
