It’s the largest class of data center — a campus of server buildings, often on hundreds of acres, run by cloud and AI companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft or by specialized developers. A single one can draw as much electricity as a mid-sized city and use large volumes of water for cooling. Why should my town care about a new data center?
Because the trade-offs land locally. A campus can bring investment, but it also draws heavily on your regional power grid and water supply, and it’s often recruited with tax breaks that run for decades. The finished facility supports relatively few permanent jobs. None of that is automatically bad — but it deserves real numbers and a real public conversation before the vote, not after.
How much power and water do they actually use?
It varies widely by project, so we won’t quote a single figure — the point is to get the numbers for the specific campus proposed near you. A large hyperscale site can request hundreds of megawatts of power, and water-cooled designs can use significant volumes drawn from the local supply. Aren’t data centers just economic development?
They can be — and we’re not anti-growth. We’re anti-unaccountable. There’s a real difference between welcoming investment with eyes open and approving a decades-long tax abatement and a major grid and water commitment before residents have seen the terms. We push for disclosure, scrutiny, and public debate — not for pretending the projects shouldn’t exist.
