EyeTech's dive into submerged data centers is a fun watch, and credit to them for making cooling engineering interesting. Dunking servers in seawater or coolant tanks does cut the energy wasted on air conditioning — that's real. But calling it a fix for "the AI energy crisis" oversells what's actually a hardware efficiency tweak. The crisis isn't just heat management, it's raw megawatt demand: these campuses still need gigawatt-scale interconnects, still strain regional grids, and still get built on tax abatements and water allocations negotiated behind closed doors, whether the servers are dunked in a tank or sitting in a warehouse.

Underwater or liquid-cooled setups can even raise new questions for host communities — what's the thermal discharge into local waterways, who inspects the coolant loops, and does the efficiency win actually translate into lower rate-payer bills, or just fatter margins for the operator? Cooling innovation is worth watching, but it shouldn't be used as a headline to wave away the harder conversations about grid strain and community cost that come with every new hyperscale build.
