Credit to WCAX Channel 3 News for putting a sitting U.S. Senator on record calling for a timeout on AI data center construction. That's not a fringe position anymore — it's a sign that the political center of gravity on this buildout is shifting, even in a small state like Vermont that doesn't have a hyperscale campus on every county line.

We don't know yet exactly what Sanders is proposing a moratorium would cover, or for how long, and we'd caution against reading too much into a short clip. But the underlying frustration tracks with what we hear from residents near proposed sites everywhere: these projects move fast, the power and water demands are enormous, and the public often finds out about the deal after the zoning board or utility commission has already signed off. A moratorium, even a symbolic call for one, is really a demand for more time to ask basic questions — who pays for the new substation, whose water rights get affected, what happens to local electric rates when a single facility can out-consume a small city.
