Credit to WMBB News 13 for flagging this one: Washington County commissioners voted unanimously for a one-year moratorium on data center projects. That's a smart, if belated, move. Too many counties across the country have found out the hard way that a data center deal signed in a hurry, often under NDA, is nearly impossible to unwind once the concrete's poured and the substation's built.
A moratorium isn't anti-development, it's due diligence. It gives local officials time to actually study what a hyperscale campus means for the county's power grid, its water table, its tax rolls, and its roads before a developer's timeline forces a rushed yes. The counties that skip this step are the ones that end up watching residential electric rates climb to subsidize industrial substations, or discover their aquifer is being drawn down for cooling water with no public hearing on record.
