Why does AI use water?

The short version: Amazon's own explainer frames water cooling as a climate-smart tradeoff, but the real question is who decides how much local water a data center gets to use, and who's watching.

Credit to Amazon Sustainability for putting a plain-English explainer out there: run the chillers on electricity, or swap in water during peak heat to save grid strain. That's a real engineering tradeoff, and it's worth understanding. But notice who's doing the explaining — the same company signing the water utility contracts and picking which climate math justifies which design. "Only 3% of the year in Ohio" sounds reassuring until you're the one asking how much water that 3% actually draws, and whether your local utility board saw those numbers before approving the deal.

The mention of Cape Town and Querétaro is the part that should stop you. Both are places that have lived through severe water stress and rationing in the last decade, and building hyperscale cooling infrastructure there — even efficient, well-intentioned infrastructure — puts a data center in direct competition with residents for the same pipes. A corporate sustainability video can tell you the system is optimized. It can't tell you what the community meeting looked like, or whether one happened at all.
