Engineering World put together a solid technical walkthrough of how hyperscale data centers actually pull power — substations, backup generators, liquid cooling, harmonics, even behind-the-meter nuclear. It's worth a watch if you want the engineering side of why a single AI campus can draw as much electricity as a mid-size city. Credit where it's due: this is a clear, well-produced breakdown of infrastructure most people never think about.

But here's what a video like this can't cover in twelve minutes: every one of those gigawatt-scale interconnections started with a utility filing, a rate case, or a tax abatement negotiated by local officials — often with little public notice until the substation is half-built. When "dozens of data centers" ramp up or drop off the grid at once, as the video notes is a real stability risk, it's ratepayers and grid operators who absorb the volatility, not the hyperscalers. The engineering is fascinating; the accountability is the part nobody's diagramming.
