Data centers seek sustainable solutions to rising water consumption
The short version: CNBC's segment on data-center water use is a good start, but the real story is which communities are footing the bill for that 'sustainable' cooling.

Diana Olick's CNBC segment gets at something we've been flagging for a while: the cooling side of the AI boom is turning into a water story as much as a power story. Evaporative cooling systems that keep server racks from melting down can drink millions of gallons a day at a single campus, and the industry's pivot toward "sustainable" alternatives — closed-loop liquid cooling, air-based systems, reclaimed water — is as much a response to local backlash as it is genuine stewardship.
The problem is that pricing out these fixes, as the segment does, tends to happen in boardrooms and trade press, not in the public meetings where utility districts and county commissions actually approve the water allocations. Communities from Georgia to Arizona have found out after the fact just how much of their water table got signed away to a facility they can't see behind a fence line. "Sustainable solutions" sound great in a press release; they matter a lot less if nobody's auditing what a facility actually draws once it's built.
We'd rather see local reporters and residents asking the specific questions: how many gallons per day, sourced from where, under what permit, with what public disclosure.
