Elon Musk telling Forbes that AI data centers are destined for orbit is a fun thought experiment, and credit to Forbes for getting him on the record. But "inevitable" is doing a lot of work here. Getting server racks into vacuum, keeping them cool without atmosphere or water, and beaming power and bandwidth back down at scale isn't a near-term engineering problem — it's a someday problem, and someday doesn't pay this month's electric bill.
Meanwhile the actual buildout is happening in county commission meetings, not launch pads. Every gigawatt Musk and his peers want for training runs is being sited on farmland and floodplains right now, backed by substations, tax abatements, and water permits that ratepayers and taxpayers are quietly cosigning. Space is a great distraction from the fact that the industry pushing hardest for "more power, more land, more water" is the same one telling you the load will leave the planet eventually.
