The short version: A Marine-vet-turned-energy-founder is building gas-powered, off-grid AI data centers in West Texas — sidestepping the grid queue but not the bigger accountability questions.

Our Take

Jake Corley's pitch is seductive: skip Texas's 400-gigawatt interconnection line, plant your servers next to stranded gas that producers used to flare, and let AI compute soak up power nobody else wanted. Data Airflow's Lance Teel and Eric Sonner give him a friendly platform to make the case for "island power" as the next phase of the data-center boom. Credit to them for surfacing a trend that deserves more scrutiny than hype.

But "no municipal water, no local rates, no neighbors" is also a tidy way of saying no local oversight. Off-grid doesn't mean off-impact — that gas still comes from wells, pipelines, and compressor stations that show up in somebody's air-quality readings, and long-term supply contracts lock in demand for fossil fuels just as AI's appetite for power is exploding nationwide. When a project markets isolation as a feature, it's worth asking who exactly signed off on the land use, the emissions, and the water that gas extraction still touches upstream — because it usually isn't the public.

West Texas may be Wile E. Coyote territory today, but this model is spreading, and not every site will be this remote or this transparent about its trade-offs.
