The Industry Code's framing is useful: data centers aren't just server racks anymore, they're industrial-scale power plants wearing a tech company's logo. Credit to the channel for connecting AI's software story to the physical buildout underneath it — the GPUs, the substations, the cooling loops. But the video stays at the strategic-power altitude. Down here at ground level, that "who controls the most compute" question turns into a much more local one: who controls the interconnection queue, who negotiated the tax abatement, and whose electric bill just went up to subsidize a training run.
When a hyperscaler needs the electric footprint of a small city, that demand doesn't materialize from nowhere — it gets layered onto grids that utilities then ask ratepayers to expand, often through rate cases most residents never hear about until the bill arrives. Add in the water drawn for cooling and the land rezoned for campuses that generate a fraction of the jobs promised, and "strategic power" starts looking a lot like a transfer of cost from a handful of companies to entire communities.
