Credit to FOX 32 Chicago for getting cameras into the room when it counts. A council chamber full of raised voices over a data center vote is exactly the kind of moment that usually happens with three people in the audience and no local press at all. Joliet residents showing up and pushing back tells you the community sniffed out something worth questioning, even if the details on power draw, water use, or tax breaks weren't fully hashed out on camera.

This is the pattern we track everywhere: a project gets pitched as jobs and tax revenue, the fine print on electricity load, water contracts, and years-long tax abatements gets settled fast, and the public comment period is the only real friction before the shovels move. Once that vote passes, the ratepayers and the water utility customers are the ones living with the outcome for decades, not the council members who approved it in one contentious meeting.
