Credit to ATLAS Science for doing the physics homework most coverage skips: servers make heat, heat has to go somewhere, and evaporative cooling is often the cheapest way to move it. That's real engineering, not a conspiracy. But "why" is only half the story — the other half is where, and at whose expense.

Because the thermodynamics don't change town to town, but the water source does. A hyperscale campus in a humid river valley and one in a drought-stressed desert county can pull the same millions of gallons a day, yet only one of those communities is watching its aquifer drop or its municipal utility ration outdoor watering. That's a local politics question, not a physics one — and it's decided in permit hearings and water-rights allocations most residents never hear about until the well runs low.
