The short version: Santeri's video on China's seawater-cooled underwater servers is a reminder that cooling AI infrastructure always costs something — it's just a question of where that cost lands.

Credit to Santeri at Daily Spatial for putting China's undersea server experiment on the radar. Dropping racks onto the seafloor and letting the ocean do the cooling sounds like a clean workaround to the fan-and-chiller arms race — but it's not a free lunch, it's a relocated bill. Someone still has to build the pressurized housings, run subsea cabling, and account for whatever heat gets dumped back into marine ecosystems over years of operation.

We'd love to say this solves America's data center water and power fights, but it doesn't, because almost none of the hyperscale buildout going up in Virginia, Texas, Arizona, and dozens of other states is headed offshore. It's landlocked, drawing down aquifers and municipal water systems for evaporative cooling, and pulling gigawatts off grids that ratepayers ultimately backstop. An ocean-cooled server farm in China is an interesting engineering flex; it's not a substitute for asking who approved the water allocation and power interconnect down the street from you.
