The short version: Microsoft's own video touts 'zero water' closed-loop cooling for new AI datacenters, but the claim only covers operations — not manufacturing, initial fill, or the power plants generating the electricity these facilities guzzle.

Our Take

This one comes straight from Microsoft's community-relations channel, so credit where it's due for a clean explainer — but read it as marketing, not an audit. Closed-loop cooling that recirculates water instead of evaporating it is a real engineering improvement over older designs, and it's worth understanding. The catch is in the fine print: "zero water for cooling during operations" is a narrow claim. It says nothing about the water used to manufacture the chips and equipment inside, the water needed to fill and periodically service that loop, or — the bigger issue — the water consumed at the power plants generating the enormous amount of electricity these AI-optimized facilities pull off the grid.

That's the trade-off nobody in a glossy explainer video mentions: solve the water problem on-site and you can quietly shift the burden to the local power supply and the ratepayers who fund it. Closed-loop or not, these are still massive, power-hungry buildings landing in specific counties, negotiating specific tax breaks, and drawing from specific substations. The technology being cleaner doesn't mean the deal is.
