Credit to DW Podcasts for pushing on a claim the industry loves to repeat: that data centers are getting water-efficient enough to stop worrying about it. Efficiency ratios can improve on paper while total draw still climbs, because the fleet keeps growing faster than any per-facility fix. A campus that cuts its water-per-megawatt number in half but triples its megawatts is still pulling more from the local supply than it did before — and that's the number that shows up in your county's water table, not the one in the sustainability report.
The other issue is who gets to verify the 'solved' claim. Most of these efficiency figures come from the operators themselves, often without independent audits, public reporting requirements, or a seat at the table for the towns supplying the water. Evaporative cooling swaps, closed-loop systems, air-based designs — these can genuinely help, but 'help' and 'solved' are different words, and communities signing 20-year water agreements deserve the distinction spelled out in writing, not in a press release.
