Friends of the Earth Action does something a lot of viral AI-water posts skip: they actually explain the mechanism. Evaporative cooling works by letting water disappear into the air to pull heat out of the system — that's the whole point, and it's why you can't just "reuse" it like bathwater. Once it evaporates, it's gone from that watershed, not sitting in a tank waiting to be run through again. Swapping in fans or straight AC cuts water use but jacks up electricity draw, and saltwater or reclaimed water brings corrosion and treatment problems most facilities aren't built for. There's no free lunch here, just tradeoffs that data center operators and the utilities that serve them get to choose, while the surrounding community lives with the result.

The 5-million-gallons-a-day figure for a single large facility isn't hyperbole, it's a real operating range, and the video is right to frame it against a town of 50,000 people. That's the comparison that matters: it's not an abstract industrial input, it's water that was otherwise available for municipal supply, agriculture, or just keeping a river healthy during a heat wave. And the sites getting built out fastest are often in hot, water-stressed regions where the strain is least affordable, not despite the climate but often because cheaper land and looser permitting make those places attractive to developers in the first place.
