Credit to Fortune India for getting this soundbite on camera, because it's worth slowing down on. A cooling loop filled once and never topped off is a real engineering approach, and if it works as described, it beats the older evaporative systems that guzzle millions of gallons a year at a single hyperscale site. But "zero water" here means zero *additional* water for that specific loop, not zero water tied to the campus. Chip fabrication, concrete, steel, and — the big one — the electricity itself all carry water footprints, especially if that power comes from thermoelectric plants that draw and discharge water for cooling.

It also matters which data centers this applies to. Microsoft runs a sprawling, aging fleet with plenty of sites still using traditional evaporative cooling, the kind that's landed the company in local fights over water allocations from Arizona to the Netherlands. A slick closed-loop demo doesn't retire those older permits or rewrite the water-use terms local utilities and cities already signed off on. When a company says "zero water," the honest follow-up is: which building, which year, which permit — and who's checking?
