Credit to Nuevatech for pulling this clip from Bezos's DRM News interview, because it's a fun thought experiment: orbital solar arrays, no weather, no permitting fights, endless clean power beamed straight into GPU racks. It's also, at minimum, a decade or two away from anything resembling a permit application. Meanwhile the actual gigawatt buildout — the one drawing down aquifers in Arizona, straining substations in Virginia, and getting tax abatements rubber-stamped by county commissions from Georgia to Ohio — is happening this year, on this planet, with your water table and your utility bill footing the bill.
It's a neat rhetorical move: paint AI infrastructure as an inevitable leap into the cosmos while the terrestrial version quietly locks in decades of ratepayer-backed transmission upgrades and water rights nobody voted on. Space data centers make for a great headline. They don't reduce the megawatts a hyperscaler is requesting from your regional grid operator right now, and they don't answer why local officials keep signing deals with non-disclosure clauses attached.
