Surajit Ram's short gives the quick physics-class answer on why data centers don't just pipe in seawater: saltwater corrodes equipment, biofouling clogs intake systems, and coastal permitting for thermal discharge is a regulatory nightmare. All true, and worth a 60-second watch. But the bigger story it doesn't have time to tell is that the vast majority of America's hyperscale buildout isn't happening on a coastline at all — it's happening in landlocked places like Virginia, Iowa, Arizona, and Texas, where the cooling water comes straight out of municipal supplies and aquifers that towns also rely on for drinking water and farming.
That's the tradeoff nobody puts in a 60-second video: the industry avoids the corrosion problem by simply pulling from freshwater systems instead, often under contracts negotiated with little public visibility into gallons-per-day or who pays if the well runs low. A handful of coastal or hybrid cooling projects do exist, but they're the exception, not the rule, and they still carry real ecological costs from heated discharge and marine life impacts.
