The short version: Google's glossy six-layer security tour is real engineering theater, but it says nothing about the megawatts, gallons, and tax breaks behind the fence line.
Our Take
Credit where it's due: Google Cloud Tech's Stephanie Wong walking through biometric scanners, man-traps, and server-cage checkpoints makes for genuinely engaging corporate video. It's a well-produced answer to "how do you keep a stranger from touching a rack." That's a real and legitimate question, and Google is transparent about the layers in a way plenty of operators aren't.
But notice what six layers of security theater conveniently keeps outside the frame: the substation upgrades, the water withdrawal permits, the county tax abatement hearings, the aquifer draw-down studies. A campus can be locked down tighter than a bank vault and still be quietly reshaping a community's power rates, water table, and land-use map with almost zero public layers of scrutiny. Security gets six layers of polish; the rezoning vote that let the building exist in the first place often gets one sparsely attended meeting.
