Credit to Arizona's Family (3TV/CBS 5) for capturing something we see everywhere: even within the same party, there's no unified theory of how to handle the data center gold rush. One camp wants a pause to figure out the ratepayer, water, and grid math before more server farms get greenlit. The other seems more inclined to keep the pipeline moving. That gap matters because it's usually filled by utility commissions and county boards making case-by-case deals with little public scrutiny.
Arizona is a bellwether here — cheap land, sun for solar PPAs, and a desert water table that's already stretched thin by agriculture and growth. When leaders can't agree on whether to hit pause, it's ordinary ratepayers and well owners who absorb the risk while the industry locks in tax abatements and transmission upgrades. A 'wait and study' approach only works if the studying actually happens before, not after, gigawatts of new load get interconnected.
