PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES
Monday, August 24, 2026
Regular Meeting
Call to order by Chairperson Walton at 6:00 pm.
Present: Blau, Harris, Griffis, Walton, Lahti, Nagel, Zamaites
Absent: Kalinec and Rickard
Motion by Member Griffis and supported by Member Zamaites to excuse Member Kalinec from tonight’s
meeting.

Motion by Member Griffis and supported by Member Nagel to approve the agenda as presented.

Public Comment
Andy Lahti – Was unable to get added to tonight’s agenda and he would like to clarify some information that
was given to the City Council from Facilitator Anderson regarding Navy Street. He will get on next month’s
agenda.
Laura Givens – Stated that the City Council was given incorrect information from Facilitator Anderson about
Navy Street and that the Navy Street working group was unaware that he was presenting at that meeting.
Glenn Bugni – 340 Navy St – Some inconsistencies with Facilitator Anderson’s information. Asked about
zoning administrator and concerns about taxes. Possible conflict of interests.

as presented.

DPW Director Erickson gave the following updates:
• Sewer/Water project on Prospect Street

Unfinished Business
Review Master Plan objectives for potential updates – no new updates, can be removed.
Data Centers Ordinance – Member Griffis gave an update. Currently working with the City of Houghton and
Portage Township on this.
Motion made by Member Nagel and supported by Member Zamaites to have Member Griffis continue
working on the ordinance and bring it to the September meeting for approval.

New Business
Motion made by Member Griffis and supported by Member Nagel to nominate and appoint Member
Zamaites as the Planning Commission member to the Recreation Commission with a term ending August
2027.

Motion made by Member Blau and supported by Member Griffis to have a subcommittee work on
rewriting the City of Hancock Guide to Development. The subcommittee will be Members Walton, Nagel
and Lahti.

Information pack of development on Navy Street as submitted by Taylor Auguston needs site access for
Planning Commission formal action – this was denied by the zoning administrator due to no road access.
Planning Commission is unable to do anything until the Navy Street Road issue is resolved.

Mike Cleveland – 304 Navy St – commented on data centers.

Motion by Member Griffis and supported by Member Nagel to adjourn the meeting at 6:31 pm.
