Granicus Digital Encoder (AMAX)
GRANICUS ENCODER
The Granicus Encoder is designed and built to provide government organizations with a
complete streaming solution.

PHYSICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The Granicus Encoder will mount in virtually all 2- or 4-post racks. It front mounts much
like a switch or router. It requires 2U (3.5”) of rack space, is 17.7” deep, and weighs 35
lbs. Rail kit is standard. Tower kit is not currently available.
Ideally installation will be in a secure, climate-controlled environment.

•

120volt NEMA 5-15 plug
Power under load is 120 Watts and 0.965 Amps

The Granicus Encoder must be powered on at all times using an uninterrupted power
supply provided by you. If necessary, you may contact your project manager to
purchase a redundant power supply through Granicus.

STORAGE
While Granicus Cloud Storage is unlimited, you can configure your Granicus Encoder to
store up to 1 TB of your most recent archived content. Before doing so, verify the disk
space on your Granicus Encoder. Standard encoding bitrates use approximately 1 GB
of disk space for every 2 hours of content.
•

Storage: 1 TB, approximately 4,000 hours at standard bitrates

Note: We do not recommend using your Granicus Encoder to store local content.

NETWORK BANDWIDTH
Granicus uses Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder to stream (650 Kbps upstream is
required to stream at standard bitrates). Granicus is also able to provide 24/7 streaming
if local bandwidth requirements are met and QOS settings are in place. Talk to your
Sales Engineer for more details.
Internal Viewers
•

Internal viewers will view streams from either the Granicus Encoder or directly
from the Granicus Datacenter.

Voting System
•

Granicus Encoder can be used for real-time voting capture when combined
with a purchase of VoteCast.

Granicus Digital Encoder (AMAX)
OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Granicus Encoder is designed to run as a stand-alone machine on Windows 10 Pro
operating system. We do not recommend joining the encoder to your domain because
it can cause unintended results such as: group policy restrictions, security restrictions,
Windows firewall blocking traffic, restricted logon hours, loss of stream, inability for
Granicus to log onto the device, etc.
However, if you do need the Granicus Encoder to be connected to your domain, we
recommend waiting until after the initial configuration and testing is complete. By
waiting until testing and configuration is complete, Granicus can better assist you in
troubleshooting an issue, if it does occur.

NETWORK LOCATION, FIREWALL, AND SECURITY
The Granicus Video Player and other parts of the solution require the viewer or user to
connect to other domains and URLs. These connections are required for the service to
operate as expected. Granicus suggests client computers have unrestricted outbound
access or, if this is not permitted, please speak with your Granicus representative. If
outbound connections over network ports 80 and 443 are restricted, you will be
responsible for making exceptions. These domains and URLs are subject to change at
any time, including during planned upgrades, and if access is restricted and Granicus
makes a change, your service could be affected.
When using the Granicus Encoder, users and viewers need to be able to connect to
certain domains and URLs. Because this is necessary for normal operation, Granicus
recommends client computers have unrestricted outbound access. If this is not
permitted by your organization, please speak with your Granicus representative.
Your Granicus Encoder is generally installed on an internal network. If that will not work,
it can also be installed on a DMZ, separate network, or VLAN. Internal viewers need to
have access to the Granicus Encoder. If placing on a separate network, access can be
restricted so that internal viewers have one-way access to the Granicus Encoder.
The Granicus Encoder requires a static internal IP Address. 192.168.1.15 is an example of
an internal IP address. This can be configured in the network properties of the Granicus
Encoder.
The Granicus Encoder needs to be allowed to bypass all content filtering and proxy
servers. The firewall needs to allow unrestricted outbound TCP connections from the
Granicus Encoder to any destination ports within the Granicus IP ranges (207.7.154.0/24

& 209.237.241.0/24 & 34.208.128.232). If the network includes an authenticating proxy
server, the Granicus Encoder must be allowed to bypass authentication.

The Granicus Encoder requires only outbound connections to Granicus on ports 80, 443,
1935, and 80 or 85. Internally on your network, the solution requires inbound and
outbound connections for other applications, including LiveManager.

AUDIO/VIDEO SOURCE REQUIREMENTS
Granicus recommends that there is one method of redundancy in your AV setup. Best
practice is to use a third-party DVR, in case there is ever an issue with the encoder. Your
Granicus Encoder must be installed in a location that allows for connection to a digital
audio/video source.
The following connections are supported:
Digital
Video Inputs (Single
Channel) and Audio
Inputs

HD/SD - SDI Supported Video Modes:
•

720 x 576 25, 50/p
• 3G SDI: 1080p 50, 59.94, 60
The audio needs to be embedded on the video
and connected to the encoder via a single BNC
connector
Digital/SDI encoders cannot do audio only
because it requires the audio to be embedded
on the video

Note: If you change A/V equipment, you need to let us know. The change in
equipment could negatively affect how your Granicus Encoder performs.

DIGITAL ENCODER A/V NOTES
If your video setup does not generate an embedded audio source, converters are
available to combine the audio into a single embedded source. Currently Granicus
supports the recording and streaming of video up to 720p. We will take the SD or HD
content you provide and stream it at the highest quality settings up to 720p.

CLOSED CAPTIONING SUPPORT
The Granicus Encoding Appliance supports video with closed captions. Captions are
extracted by Granicus and displayed below the video. Post-event, captions are
uploaded and become fully searchable through the MediaManager ViewPage. The
Granicus Encoding Appliance utilizes CEA-608 (Line 21) captions only and requires this
signal be provided by the client audio/video source

REMOTE CONNECTIVITY AND MANAGEMENT
Granicus will update, monitor, support, and maintain our software on your Granicus
Encoder. All other maintenance, such as performing Windows updates and
maintenance of software that is not provided by Granicus, will remain your
responsibility. Installation of third-party software that is not specifically approved by
Granicus may negatively impact the Granicus Encoder’s performance, and in extreme
cases the encoder may need to be reimaged to restore normal operations.
The following software applications are used by Granicus to remotely manage and
connect to the device:

•
•
•

ScreenConnect
Zabbix
Other programs and applications as necessary

HARDWARE/SOFTWARE MAINTENANCE
When you purchase a Granicus Encoder, Granicus provides a three-year maintenance
plan that covers hardware and software failures. If a hardware or software failure is
encountered, Granicus will replace the Granicus Encoder at no cost to you. The
replacement will arrive within 10 business days.

FAQ
Q: When can you expect your encoder to arrive?
A: If you are a new client, your encoder should arrive at or around the time of the
project kick off call. Your Granicus representative will provide you with additional
details, as each client’s timeline is different.

GLOSSARY
