Data Centers: Deal or Dilemma? - Keystone Edition on WVIA - FULL EPISODE

WVIA · 7 months ago

The short version: WVIA's Keystone Edition digs into Pennsylvania's data center boom, giving developers, officials, and skeptical residents a seat at the same table.

Our Take

Credit to WVIA and host Julie Sidoni for doing something too many outlets skip: putting a developer, public officials, and affected residents in the same room and letting the hard questions land. Pennsylvania is quickly becoming a hyperscale hotspot, and the pattern is familiar — zoning boards that were never built for gigawatt-scale industrial loads are suddenly the only line of defense communities have before ground gets broken.

The economic pitch always sounds clean: jobs, tax base, investment. What gets glossed over is who actually eats the cost of new substations, transmission upgrades, and water withdrawals once the ribbon-cutting is over — because it's rarely the developer alone. Northeastern and Central PA residents asking about electricity demand and long-term community impact are asking the right question at the right moment, before the zoning variance is signed and the leverage disappears.

If you want to see how this compares to fights playing out in your own state, check our facility map for what's proposed near you, and if a project is heading toward a vote in your county, our take-action page has tools to make sure residents get a say before the deal is done, not after.
