Credit where it's due: AP's animated explainer (work by Donavon Brutus) does something a lot of coverage skips — it actually walks through the mechanics of why a building full of servers needs so much electricity and water in the first place. That's useful context, because the AI boom gets discussed constantly in terms of chips and market caps, and almost never in terms of substations, cooling towers, and the utility crews who have to make the math work.

Here's what the explainer format can't fully capture, though: every one of those racks lands somewhere — a specific county, a specific grid interconnect, a specific water utility with finite capacity. The 'why AI needs so much power' story is really a thousand local stories about rate cases, tax abatements, and permits that most residents never get a chance to weigh in on before the concrete is poured.
