How AI is Ruining the Electric Grid

Wendover Productions · 1 year ago

The short version: Wendover Productions lays out how AI data centers are straining the grid — we say the real story is who pays for that strain and who approved it.

Our Take

Wendover Productions is one of the better explainer channels for making a sprawling, technical mess digestible, and "How AI is Ruining the Electric Grid" does what it says: it walks through why hyperscale AI campuses are stressing transmission lines, interconnection queues, and generation capacity in ways the grid wasn't built for. Good primer if you want the mechanics.

Where we'd push further is the money and the paperwork. Grid strain doesn't just appear — it shows up as rate hikes for ordinary ratepayers, as utilities asking regulators for permission to build new gas plants "for reliability," and as special contracts that let data center operators jump the interconnection line while everyone else waits. Those are decisions made in utility commission hearings and county zoning meetings, not acts of nature. Someone signed off on the substation upgrade, the rate class, the tax abatement — and it's rarely the neighborhood next to the new campus.

If this video has you wondering what that looks like near you, check our facility map for the buildout happening in your backyard, and our take-action page for how to actually show up when these deals get decided.
