Data centers' drain on resources raising concern of Miami Valley residents

WDTNTV · 8 months ago

The short version: WDTN spotlights Miami Valley residents worried about data centers straining local power and water — a story playing out in county after county nationwide.

Our Take

Credit to WDTNTV for putting a camera in front of the people who actually live next to these projects, not just the developers pitching them to county commissioners. When Miami Valley residents say they're worried about strain on power and water, they're voicing the same question we hear from Georgia to Arizona: who exactly signed off on this, and did anyone model what it does to the local grid and the water table before the ribbon-cutting?

These deals rarely get a public vote. A utility commission approves a rate structure, an economic development office signs a tax abatement, and the first most neighbors hear about it is when construction trucks show up or their power bill creeps higher. Ohio has become one of the hottest data center corridors in the country, and that growth is colliding with aging infrastructure and utility bills that everyone else in the region still has to pay.

We'd rather residents have the numbers before the concrete gets poured, not after. Check our facility map to see what's been proposed or built near you, and if you want to push for real disclosure on power and water impacts, our take-action page has a place to start.
