Apex Engineering's documentary walks through the impressive plumbing of Stargate — GPUs, liquid cooling loops, fiber, the works — and as a piece of engineering explainer content, it's well made. But a tour of the machine room isn't the same as an accounting of the bill. A $500B buildout backed by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank doesn't materialize on "the plains outside Abilene" without a very specific set of local deals: substations, transmission upgrades, water contracts, and property tax abatements that get negotiated by a handful of officials on behalf of everyone who lives there.
That's the part these glossy walkthroughs routinely skip. Every gigawatt of power Stargate pulls off the Texas grid, and every gallon its cooling systems consume, is a gigawatt and gallon a neighboring community isn't getting at yesterday's price. Abilene didn't get a seat at the table when Sam Altman needed a site — it got a pitch deck, and the terms of that pitch deck matter a lot more to ratepayers than the specs of the GPUs inside.
