Vox's framing is worth sitting with: the climate math on data centers isn't really about the buildings themselves, it's about what utilities are burning to keep them running. When a hyperscaler needs guaranteed power now, the fastest answer is often a new gas plant or a coal unit that was supposed to retire staying online a few more years. That's a climate cost, but it's also a local cost — the emissions, the water used to cool those plants, and the rate hikes that get spread across everyone on the grid, whether or not they'll ever see a server rack.
What the video doesn't have room to get into is who actually approves these deals.
