Morning Brew's explainer is a solid 101 on what actually happens inside these buildings — the servers, the cooling, the cloud plumbing behind your Zoom calls and AI prompts. Credit where it's due: most Americans have no mental picture of what a "data center" even is, and that's step one to understanding why one might be going up down the road from them.
But "what data centers do" is only half the story. The other half is what they take from the communities that host them: megawatts pulled off a grid that everyone else's electric bill has to help cover, millions of gallons of water a day for cooling in places that don't always have it to spare, farmland and industrial sites rezoned fast, and property tax abatements that local officials sign off on with surprisingly little public debate. Explainers like this one tend to end right where the real accountability questions start.
