Gilroy to vote on pausing new data center development

NBC Bay Area · 1 month ago

The short version: Gilroy's council is weighing a moratorium on new data centers, joining a growing list of towns hitting pause before rubber-stamping the buildout.

Our Take

Credit to NBC Bay Area for flagging this before the vote instead of after the concrete's poured. Gilroy joining the pause-and-study camp matters because moratoriums are one of the few tools a city council has to slow a deal down long enough to actually ask about substation capacity, water draw, and who's covering the tax abatement — questions that too often get answered after the permits are signed, not before.

What we'll be watching is whether "temporary" stays temporary or turns into real leverage: does Gilroy use the pause to write enforceable standards on power and water use, or does it just buy the industry time to lobby the objections away? Every city facing this decision right now is basically running the same experiment with different outcomes, and residents deserve to see which way it breaks.

If you want to see how Gilroy stacks up against other towns already hosting or fighting data centers, check our facility map, and if you're in a community about to face this same vote, our take-action page has a starting point.
