Credit to DW's Planet A team for making the physics fun — subsea servers cooled by the ocean, satellites cooled by the vacuum of space. It's a legitimate engineering path, and the water-savings math checks out on paper. But watch closely and notice what's missing: nobody in the video is asking who approves these projects, what happens to the seabed lease or the coastal permitting process, or who eats the cost if a submerged data hall needs emergency maintenance. Novelty cooling doesn't erase the fact that someone still has to sign off on the site, the grid interconnect, and the tax deal.

Here's the bigger issue we keep hammering on: exotic solutions like underwater pods make for great headlines, but they're not what's actually landing in most American communities right now. What's landing is conventional data centers, built fast, drawing millions of gallons from local water systems and locking in decades of electricity demand — often with tax abatements negotiated behind closed doors before residents get a vote. Space and ocean data centers are years from commercial scale. The buildout hitting your water bill and your grid queue is happening today, on dry land, in your county.
