What's that sound? It's Mount Pleasant's new AI data center

WISN 12 News · 7 months ago

The short version: WISN 12 reports Mount Pleasant residents near Microsoft's new AI data center are stuck living with a constant hum as the facility nears completion.

Our Take

Credit to WISN 12 for putting a microphone (literally) on what happens after the ribbon-cutting hype fades: the low, constant hum of transformers and cooling gear that doesn't show up in any economic development press release. Mount Pleasant leaders sold this Microsoft campus as a jobs-and-tax-base win. Nobody put "new ambient noise in your living room" on the community benefits slide.

This is the pattern we track everywhere: the site plan gets approved based on renderings and revenue projections, and the lived reality — noise, water draw, transmission upgrades, who pays for them — gets discovered by residents only once concrete is poured and equipment is humming 24/7. Sound easements and acoustic mitigation should be negotiated before groundbreaking, not litigated after neighbors start losing sleep.

If you live near a hyperscale build going up in your town, don't wait for the noise complaints to pile up before asking questions. Check our facility map to see what's already been approved near you, and use our take-action resources to find out what leverage residents actually have.
