Almost No One Realizes This About AI Data Centers
The short version: Economics Explained frames AI data centers as an economic force most people underestimate — we'd add: someone local is footing the power, water, and tax bill.
Our Take
Credit to Economics Explained for zooming out on the macro story — AI data centers as a new kind of industrial infrastructure reshaping capital flows and regional economies. That framing is useful, but it tends to flatten the part we track: this isn't an abstract national trend, it's hundreds of individual siting decisions, each with a utility commission docket, a water permit, and a tax abatement vote attached to it.
The "almost no one realizes" hook works because the buildout really is happening faster than most local reporting can keep up with — new substations, new water intakes, new PILOT agreements, often approved with minimal public notice. Those deals lock in who pays for the transformers and transmission upgrades, and it's rarely the hyperscaler eating the full cost. Ratepayers and taxpayers in the host county usually carry a share, whether or not the jobs promised on the glossy press release ever fully materialize.
