Texas halts power grid connections for new data centers
The short version: Texas just hit pause on new data-center grid hookups until regulators audit how much power and water the boom is actually draining from the state.
Our Take
FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth reports Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered state regulators to freeze new grid connections for data centers until a full audit of their power and water usage is done. That's a big deal in a state that's been rolling out the red carpet for hyperscale campuses for years — Texas doesn't pause anything for data centers, it usually just says yes.
What this really signals is that even grid operators and elected officials are starting to admit they don't have a clear picture of what they've already approved. If Texas needs an audit to figure out how much juice and water these facilities are pulling before adding more, that's a tacit admission the buildout has been running ahead of the data. Ratepayers and well owners near these sites have been asking these exact questions for a while now, usually without answers.
We'll be watching what this audit actually surfaces — and whether "pause" turns into real accountability or just a pit stop before approvals resume. Check our facility map to see what's already been built and connected in your area, audit or no audit.
