Credit where it's due: Applied Digital's "Behind the Build" series is slicker than most corporate explainer content, and closed-loop liquid cooling is a real technology that can cut direct water withdrawals at the facility fence line. That's worth acknowledging. But this is a company marketing video, not an independent audit, and "almost no water for cooling" is a claim about one system boundary — the server hall — not the full footprint of a data center campus.

What the episode doesn't dwell on: closed-loop systems still need water to fill the loop initially and to make up for leaks and evaporation at the chillers or dry coolers that reject heat outside the building. And the bigger water story for any AI campus is upstream — the electricity these racks pull, often from thermoelectric power plants that withdraw and consume water for their own cooling. A facility can be "water-light" on paper while still driving real water and power demand somewhere else on the grid. Land use, tax abatements, and who actually signs off on these deals matter just as much as the cooling loop diagram.
