Credit to Kyle Hill for pushing back on the idea that data-center water use is the whole story — he's right that fixating on gallons per query can miss the bigger picture. But "it's complicated" is exactly why we keep a running facility map: the complication isn't abstract, it's a specific county with a specific water utility trying to figure out what a hyperscale campus actually costs its ratepayers versus a tech company's marketing math.
Water is rarely the only ask. The same projects pulling from local aquifers or municipal systems are also the ones negotiating property tax abatements, drawing hundreds of megawatts off the grid, and getting permitted with minimal public hearing time. Treating water as "a distraction" is fair only if you're also putting the power bills, the land use, and the tax breaks on the same table — otherwise you've just swapped one narrow framing for another.
