Credit to Business Insider for putting a number and a map to something most Americans only feel in their utility bills: data centers are not evenly spread, and neither are the costs. A state-by-state snapshot is useful, but the real story is what happens after the pin drops on the map — the substation upgrades, the water permits, the tax abatements nobody voted on directly.
Knowing a facility is "in your state" tells you little without knowing who's paying for the transmission lines, whose water rights got reallocated, and what the local utility commission approved in a filing most residents never see. That's the gap between a headline map and accountability. Bills go up for everyone on the grid whether or not you ever load an AI query.
