Amazon’s Satellite Internet Needs Ground Stations Too

Everyone talks about data centers when they think about the tech industry’s physical footprint. But satellite internet networks need ground infrastructure too — and Amazon’s Leo constellation just filed paperwork for three new six-antenna ground stations in Florida, Minnesota, and Texas, according to Data Center Dynamics.

What’s actually being built

Ground stations are the physical link between orbiting satellites and the terrestrial internet. Dishes on the ground receive signals from satellites overhead and hand that data off to fiber networks, which eventually connect to data centers and the wider internet backbone. As a satellite constellation grows — and Amazon Leo is scaling up fast to compete in the broadband-from-space market — it needs more of these stations, spread across more locations, to keep pace with coverage and capacity demands.
