Ireland’s data centers consumed nearly as much electricity in 2025 as every household in the country combined, according to a new report — about 23% of the nation’s total power draw, even after years of restrictions meant to slow the buildout. How a small country got here
Ireland became a magnet for data centers because of its cool climate, EU access, and tax and business-friendly policies. Cooler air means less energy spent on cooling servers, which made it an attractive site for cloud and AI infrastructure. But grid capacity didn’t grow as fast as demand, and regulators have spent years trying to slow new connections in the Dublin area specifically because the grid couldn’t keep up. Even with those brakes applied, the sector’s share of national electricity kept climbing to nearly a quarter of all power used.
Why this matters beyond Ireland
Ireland is a preview, not an outlier. The same dynamics — cheap or available land, tax incentives, existing fiber and transmission lines — are drawing hyperscale data centers to towns and counties across the U.S. When a handful of large facilities can rival or exceed the electricity use of entire residential sectors, that reshapes who pays for grid upgrades, how utilities plan new generation, and whether local rates rise to cover infrastructure built largely to serve corporate customers rather than households.
What residents can actually watch for
The Irish case shows that even active regulatory restrictions don’t automatically cap growth — demand can outpace the guardrails. For American communities facing a proposed or expanding data center, the practical questions are the same: What is the facility’s projected electricity and water use? Who is paying for new substations, transmission lines, or generation? Are there public reports tracking actual consumption over time, the way Ireland now has? Utilities and local governments should be able to answer these questions before permits are approved, not after.
