Microsoft’s 38GW Plan: A Tripling of Data Center Power

A new report says Microsoft is aiming for roughly 38 gigawatts of data center capacity by 2032 — up from about 12 gigawatts today. That’s not a small expansion. It’s more than tripling the company’s footprint in a little under a decade, and it puts a single company’s infrastructure plans on the same scale as major regional power systems.

Why the number matters

A gigawatt is a huge unit of electricity — roughly enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes. When one company talks about adding tens of gigawatts of data center capacity, it’s really talking about building (or contracting for) power plants, substations, and transmission lines to match. Data centers run around the clock, so this isn’t peak demand that comes and goes — it’s steady, heavy draw on the grid, year-round.
