Copyright
A volunteer/Board member recently came to Josh with a concern regarding Music Now, a program that features full-length songs,
and the possibility that the Network could face a copyright claim or lawsuit as a result.
Music Now is a program I began producing last month. The concern prompted me to do some research into copyright and fair use,
and I believe this is an issue worth looking into—not just for Music Now, but because we have more than one music-oriented
program and other programming that incorporates copyrighted music.
One thing I came across is that it may be worthwhile to contact Comcast and AT&T directly and ask whether they have any music
licensing or blanket licensing arrangements that apply to the programming they carry, and, more importantly, whether those
arrangements extend to programming supplied by the Network.
My intention in raising this issue is not to suggest that Music Now or any other existing program is necessarily infringing copyright.
Rather, I think it would be prudent for the Network to determine what music rights and licenses we currently have, what they cover,
and whether there are any gaps that should be addressed.
